Notes for Frederick W. Givan
Possibly the ship the “F. & E. Givan” was named after Fred and his brother Ernie. It was a schooner registered in Cambridge, NB and was broken up in 1913.
12The 1901 Census confirms his birthdate but says he was from Moncton while his obituary confirms he was born in St. John, NB (probably when his father had his store there).
- was in the hardware business “Robertson & Givan”
- was ward 1 alderman for City Council in 1897
- was mayor of Moncton for one term 1902 and 1903
32- was a member of the Masonic Order
- died young with peritonitis; obituary says age 39 but cemetery records and census data from 1891 and 1901 indicate he would have been 40.

Obituaries notes for Frederick W. Givan
Fragment of largely illegible copy of obituary from Jan 16, 1907:
“Sad Death of Mr. F. W. Givan
Died on Wednesday After Being Operated on at the Hospital
The death occurred this morning of Mr. Frederick W. Givan, one of Moncton’s most popular and best known citizens, after a brief illness of only a few days.
Mr. Givan was around to ____ on Saturday although throughout ____ he had not been in the best of health.
On Saturday he was at the Curling Rink and participated in a ____. Sunday he was taken with violent pains and it was apparent he was suffering from some serious internal disorder. The symptoms became more pronounced on Monday and on Tuesday doctors decided on an operation, the patient being removed to the Hospital. The operation was performed by Doctors White and Ferguson, and a condition of intestinal _____ [possibly typhlitis?] was revealed as to exclude all hope of Mr. Givan’s recovery. Death resulted early this morning.
Mr. Givan, who was 39 years of age was a son of the late Mr. W. H. Givan. He was born in St. John but _____ his life in this city.”
The remaining approximately one third of the article is illegible.
It states he was 39 but if his birthdate from the 1901 census is correct he would have been 40 when he died.
