Signed on April 21, 1826 when he joined the 59th Regiment at Cawnpore, India at the age of 12.

Sergeant James Sutherland’s signature
Signed on April 6, 1852 on his discharge papers. Although officially discharged from Fermoy, Ireland, he was stationed in Dublin at the time (eleven days before his 4th child was born there).
Long Service and Good Conduct Medal
An example of the Victorian Long Service and Good Conduct Medal such as James Sutherland Jr. was awarded in 1853. In the centre of the obverse is the royal coat of arms. His medal would have had his name impressed or engraved into the edge.
