Gateway Genealogical Society, Camache, Iowa; Jan 1996 History of Clinton County, Iowa, page 748 Biographical Sketches: "MRS HARRIET TURNER TRITES: P O Dewitt, widow of Mr Job Trites; resides in Sec 14. Mr Trites was born in new Brunswick in 1823, his parents removed to Harrison Co., Ohio when he was a child; he came to Dewitt Township about 1841. He married his present widow, Harriet Turner Trites, daughter of George William H. Turner in 1842 and located on the farm where Mrs Trites now lives in 1845; he enlisted in the 26th Iowa V.I., was wounded at the Battle of Arkansas Post, and died from the effect of his wounds in Memphis, Tennessee Feb 14,1863. Mrs Trites has three children-- Mrs Nancy M Bird, Lewis Cass, and Edwin R."108

Application for Widow's Army Pension Sate of Iowa County of Clinton On this 16th day of December, A.D. 1864, personally appeared before me, Clerk of the District Court, in and for the County and State aforesaid, Mrs Harriet Trites, a resident of DeWitt, in the county of Clinton, and State of Iowa, aged 44 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, on her oath, make the following declarattion, in order to obtain the benefits of the provision made by the act of Congress approved July 14th, 1862, granting Pensions: That she is the widow of Job Trites, who was a Corporal in Company H, commanded by Lt. M. Nye afterwards by Capt. W. ___________ in the 26 Regiment of Iowa Infantry Volunteers, mustered into the service of the United States from the State of Iowa in the war of 1861, and who died at Adams Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, from a gunshot wound _______at Arkansas Post while in the line of duty on the 11th day of January 1863 and died on the 15 day of February 1863, as this deponent verily believes. She further declares that she was lawfully married to Job Trites at Dewitt, Clinton County, in the state of Iowa by Robert _______ Esq. a Justice of the Peace on the 9th day of June 1842; that her husband, the aforesaid Jobe Trites died on the day above memtioned, as she verilly has remained a widow ever since the death of her said husband. (The "additional evidence" to application No. 15520) as will more fully appear by reference to the proof hereto annexed. The personal description of the said Jobe Trites, her deceased husband, is as follows: age, about 40 years; height five feet nine inches;light blue eyes; fair complexion; sandy hair; occupation at time of enlistment, a farmer. She further declares that she had, by the deceased husband three children, now living, under the age of sixteen years, named aged and residing as follows: Lewis Cass Trites, born on the 25th day of ------1867; Edwin Ryland Trites born on the 27 day of March 1854; Ellen Katrina Trites born on the 1st day of ________ 1860 all residing in DeWitt Twp., Clinton County, Iowa. . . ." Obituaries notes for Harriet Turner
“Death of Mrs Trites, Mrs Harriet Trites died last Sunday morning at the home of her son L. C. on the old homestead two miles west of Dewitt. Deceased was born in New Brunswick Oct 30, 1818 and when about 22 years old came to Iowa with her parents Dr and Mrs Geo. Wm H. Turner and in 1842 married Job Trites and soon afterwards settled on government land near town where she has made her home since. Mr Trites was a member of the 26th Iowa Infantry, was wounded Jan 11, 1863 and died a month later at Memphis. The remains were brought home and laid in Oakridge Cemetery. Their three children, Lewis C, with whom the mother had lived of late, Mrs D.W. Bird, near Dewitt, and Ed. Riley, of Pocahontas Center, Iowa are still living. Funeral services were at the home Monday afternoon, Rev. J.P. Gibson officiating. The pall beareres were Wm R English, D.G. Butterfield, Wm II Hall, O.M. Nye, Geo. K Ryder,and John W Swords, all of whom were members of Mr Trites company in the army. Mrs Trites had been a lifelong and consistant member of the Baptist Church and was a woman highly respected by all who knew her.”108
