Notes for Albert Earnest Trites
“He worked on the railroad in Maine for a time, owned a General store and owned part of the ‘The Smith Silver Black Fox Company Ltd.’”229

“There is also the history of the Silver Foxes. The fox ranchers of Prince Edward Island had tried to keep a monopoly of the fox ranching. Mr. Brown with the backing of Victor Gowland and Albert Trites purchased a pair of silver foxes for a price of $15,000. This was an amazing amount of money to invest for such an untried enterprise in the Salisbury area. The Salisbury Black Fox and Fur Company formed in 1913 may have been started with three male fox pups purchased from Mr. Brown. Pat Gray along with D. Allison Trites and John Kennedy ran this company as directors. William Chapman became the ranch foreman. These family names are still prevalent in the area. Within three years Salisbury was reaping huge profits for the fox industry. Later the Colpitts family started a successful fox ranch with just 3 pairs of fox. For years the archway welcoming visitors to Salisbury noted "Salisbury Foxes Have Led The World Through C.M. Lampson's Sales" Unfortunately the great arch had to be removed to allow higher vehicle loads to pass along Main Street.” [From the History of Salisbury - New Brunswick Tourist Association]180
