Notes for William L. Colpitts
From Dave Colpitts:
“I have a map from 1862 which lists the inhabitants of Coverdale and Hillsborough it clearly shows John Colpitts property and his neighbor Rufus Crossman. William L. Colpitts married Mary Jane Crossman, daughter of Rufus and Clarrisa Crossman. John R. Colpitts and Rufus Crossman were neighbors living in Hillsborough, NB and their children married each other.” [The 1851 census shows a family of Steeves next door to the John R. Colpitts family in Hillsborough, although there is an 18 y.o. William Crossman, Labourer, living with the Steeves. At this time Rufus and Claricy Crossman are listed in Coverdale parish, close by, just across the parish border as can be seen on the 1862 map.]
“William L. Colpitts married Mary Jane Crossman. They had three children... James Oscar, Howard Judson, and John Wetmore. The L. in Wiliam's name nobody knows for sure, but it was probably Leslie since my grandfather and great-uncle both bear that name. William L. Colpitts is the son of John and Seraphina Colpitts...All of the descendants of William L. Colpitts keep close contact with one another till this day. William L. Colpitts was born in 1831 according to the 1851 census with parents listed John Colpitts and Seraphina Fillmore living in Hillsborough, NB. They were all Baptist (my great grandfather was too). They moved from Hillsborough, NB to Elgin, NB, John and Seraphina are listed in Elgin, NB in 1871 Census and Mapleton, Elgin, NB in 1881. William L. Colpitts received a Crown Land Grant 15 JUL 1889 56 BLOCK 77, ELGIN Parish.”
110From Don Colpitts:
“William (L) was living in Hillsborough in the 1871 Census with his wife, Mary Jane (CROSSMAN) Colpitts, and their son James Oscar Colpitts.
In 1881 Census, he was still with his family, Mary Jane, sons, James Oscar, Howard Judson & John Wetmore Colpitts.
The street directory of 1889, shows "Colpitts, Mrs. Wm, home at 10 Telegraph St., Moncton."
The 1891 Census, Mary and the boys were living in Moncton, NB. William (L) was not living with them.
The 1896 Moncton directory shows that Mary Jane as, "Colpitts, Mary J., WIDOW, William (L) home on Queen Street, Moncton. She died in Moncton on 8 Sept. 1899.
William (L) Colpitts was still living on 13 May 1890, when he sold a Crown Land Grant in Elgin on that date. So he must have died between 1890 and 1896, when Mary Jane was listed as a widow.
Two of William (L) and Mary Jane's children, James Oscar & John Wetmore Colpitts’ death certificates list William (L) as born in "Little River, Albert Co., NB."
Some data on the web list William (L) as the son of Lazarus & Jane (Steeves) Colpitts, but that has been proved as false.”
