Notes for Oliver Jones
Said to have had 22 children: 5 with his first wife, 6 with his 2nd and 11 with his 3rd! (although I can’t find record of all these)
His first cousin, Abner, settled nearby, and worked with him in the shipbuilding business (one of his many enterprises). One of Abner’s sons, William Colpitts Jones, was manager of Oliver’s Westmorland Bank (before it went bankrupt), and Oliver was a pallbearer at Abner’s funeral.

“Oliver JONES was born at Petitcodiac in the year 1821. He is 68 years of age but still retains much of the vigor of youth. He is a direct descendent of the original settlers. When he first came to Moncton in 1829, Mr. Jones was but 8 years of age, but he has a clear recollection of the eight or nine buildings that then existed at the Bend and remembers the brick house erected by by old Christian Trites near the river bank, just south of the railway machine shops. After residing for a number of years with his sister, Mrs. BENNETT, mother of C.B. BENNETT and Mrs. J. DeWolf SPURR, Mr. Jones returned to Petitcodiac and it was not until 1839 that he became a permanent resident of the place. Immediately after arriving at the Bend, he purchased the Crookshank and Walker property, from Main street to the river, containing four acres. Mr. Jones was for some time associated with the hotel business with the late James DUNLAP and finally sold out to him, engaging in trading and speculating in lands, buying and selling for the St. John market. In 1841, he constructed the first wharf in the place. About 30 years ago, Mr. Jones was prostrated with bilious fever. (see original for busines career)”51
Obituaries notes for Oliver Jones
excerpt from his obituary in The Daily Transcript, Moncton, November 15, 1899:
“Mr. Oliver Jones was a direct descendant of one of the families that originally settled this part of New Brunswick and he watched the growth of Moncton from its infancy to its present status as the centre of the I.C.R. and the story of Mr. Jones life is to a large extent the history of the real estate transactions of the town in the earlier period of its history...In 1848 Mr. Jones purchased from the late John Trites 800 acres of land including a large part of the middle and west end of the town, extending from the river on the south to the creek at the base of what is know known as the Stephen Humphrey farm on the north...Among those who assisted him in clearing the ground of trees and grading up the piece were Abner Jones, a Mr. West, Robert Wilson, Christian Steeves, Reuben Steeves, and old Mr. Flooks...”
His funeral was huge and attended by the Premier of New Brunswick.
