Memoirs notes for Greta Ethel Jones
From the Jones file at Moncton Museum:
“Memories
by Greta Grant
The Jones family lived at the beginning of the American Revolution at the bend of the Petiticodiac River in New Brunswick, the present site of the City of Moncton so named after Colonel Moncton who was commanding a detachment of British Troops then stationed there.
Three men, all Empire Loyalists, had come from New York State, they were Abner Jones, Barret Lutz and James Trites and then settled after obtaining land grants and landed citizenship.
The men were Abner Jones, who was granted 400 acres of land. Lutz receiving many more acres that are now situated in the centre of the City of Moncton, his name is enshrined there in the naming of Streets, etc i.e. and in the descendents.
Trites was granted a large section of land on the west side of Moncton, good farm land.
Jones married a Miss Colpitts, a girl of English parentage, the eldest son Charles was the father of Mrs. Grant now living at Gibsons, B.C.
Henry, the 2nd. son, moved to Boston (the undeclared capital of the Canadian Maritimes) he raised a family there.
Frank, the 3rd. son, entered the practice of Law in Boston. William, the 4th. son, also a lawyer.
There were two daughters. Eliza married a Mr. Simpson and they had one daughter. Annie, the youngest married Capt. Henry Given [sic] who owned and was Master of a deep sea sailing ship, he traded in bothe the Atlantic and Pacific ports, they had four daughters named Lulu, Edna, Nina and Myrtle, all are now deceased. There was a son Harry who served in the Royal Flying Corps.
Humphrey Jones, 5th. son, was killed by a runaway horse, he was a very handsome and capable young man, his niece Greta Grant was not born until later.
In addition to the 400 acres Jones was granted the privilege of opening lumber camps from Moncton to Shediac Cape, a stretch of about 17 miles, the lumber was for the Intercolonial Railway tracks from Halifax to Montreal then under construction.
Charles Jones married Mary Given [sic] from Annapolis, they had many children - William, Lillian, Hallie, Greta, Winnifred, there were some others that died in infancy.
Lillian, Hallie and Winnifred did not have any children.
Greta, the 3rd. daughter, married Edward Blake Grant, a mechanical engineer in Vancouver, B.C. Edward was the eldes son of Judge David Grant of the County Court in Vancouver.
Greta children are Mary, Audrey, Kenneth and Elsie. Greta and Mary live at Gibsons, B.C.”60

[There are some inaccuracies in this account. Abner, who was born in New Brunswick, was too recent to be one of the original Empire Loyalist but was likely descended from them. The order of Abner’s children appears to be wrong. Mary Givan was from Harbourville (Givan Wharf) in Kings county, not Annapolis.]
