Her nephew, Wolfgang Franke, described her as rather depressed. When he was a small boy around 1925, he was sent alone on the train from Kiel with an identifying sign hanging around his neck to visit his Aunt and Uncle in Laucha. He remembered helping his uncle with the little ferry that brought passengers across the Unstrut river, thus earning a few coins, and was upset that his uncle took these coins for himself (of course these were hard economic times). When he didn’t like the food at dinnertime his Aunt Greta said: “Gucke, gucke!” (literally “Look, look!” or “Will you look at that.”). When he returned home to Kiel he told this story to his father and remembers him laughing loudly.
