Notes for Andrew Somers
Andrew Sommer, in 1794, was the first Petitcodiac German to be appointed Hogreave. Regulations disallowed people from letting livestock roam free and “no owner of any swine living within one mile of any neighbour or other Inhabitant shall suffer any swine to go at large out of his pen, inclosure or pasture, from the first day of April to the first day of December...on penalty of two shillings each swine for every offence.” The Hogreave’s duty was “to yoke such Hog for which he shall be entitled to receive two shillings...And in case any Hogreave shall neglect to do his duty, for each neglect or offence he shall incur the penalty of the Law of the Province for Neglect of Duty.”120
