Notes for Percival George Edward Burt
He was born on Easter Day.
“My mother's brother Percy, as the only son, received the benefits of education that my mother yearned for. He was sent to Rothsay College [likely Rothesay Collegiate School which was run by the Synod of the Diocese of Fredericton] but was no scholar. I gather he drifted somewhat, to the despair of his mother and ended up in Hartford Conn. as a photographer for the engine company Pratt and Whitney. Percy had considerable skill as a magician and ventriloquist. He would bring his dummy Marko with him when he came to visit us in Toronto. Percy died in the 1940's. He had no children and after his death his wife Mae vanished off into California into some religious cult.”4

He supposedly moved to Hartford, Connecticut in 1915 according to the 1930 census17 but not mentioned in the 1920 census. His father AFB Burt was listed on border crossings in April, 1916 visiting his son Percy at 62 Newburyport, MA, so likely Percy didn’t come to Hartford until later. His U.S. Record of Registry shows that he lived at 36 School ST., Hartford, Conn. in 1932. He was described as 5’ 6 1/2”, medium complexion, brown hair and brown eyes with 1/2” scar near the second knuckle 3rd finger left hand.

His middle initial is listed as G. in the 1930 census; it looks like an E. in his signature and he’s listed in his sister’s “Longfellow Birthday Book” as P.E. Burt which is intriguing since we have a painting of the Givan coat of arms which appears to have been signed P.E. Burt and we know the Burts and the Givans grew up together in Shediac.

“Percy died 1943 Tuesday early a.m.” written in Frances Cecil Burt’s birthday book under June 29.1
